GO*DO Organic White Chocolate Vanilla

Just admitted that I was not looking forward to eating anymore chocolate after the excesses of Christmas and New Year. Well some thirty minutes later here I am talking about organic white chocolate produced by those lovely people at GO*DO at their factory in Italy. As you can imagine I have absolutely no will power, a complete push over, the slightest mention of not eating chocolate has pushed the switch inside my head that say's, 'Eat chocolate Now! Ok, well if I'm being pedantic white chocolate isn't really chocolate because it contains no cocoa solids, so I'm covered?

As a rule of thumb the more cocoa butter there is in the bar the better the chocolate will taste. If you see vegetable fat on the list of ingredients put the item back quickly.

The Packaging: As many of you will know by now but for those who don't GO*DO in Italian, means a moment of pure pleasure, just for you. I'm a fan of their packaging and branding as it is simple with no fuss.

The Chocolate: GO*DO are not exactly specific about where their white chocolate comes from. But what I do know is that they have cocoa farms located in Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Peru. So, all high quality then. The presentation of this bar is good especially with the little dark flecks of vanilla dotted about. On smelling the chocolate the aroma of vanilla is intense, almost heady and reminiscent of a Milky Bar. White chocolate doesn't snap like milk or dark chocolate probably because it is much softer. More a dull thud. First chunk on the tongue producers a roughness and slightly grainy texture. Being white chocolate it quickly melts with a strong sweet taste finishing off with a final vanilla flourish. There is a very slight aftertaste and I'm guessing this is the milk solids coming through.

Vanilla - GO*DO
The ingredients state that it contains white chocolate (min. cocoa solids 30%, min. milk solids 28%). Organic can sugar, organic cocoa butter, organic milk powder, soya lecithin and organic vanilla extract from Madagascar.

Overall I give this bar a score of 6/10 for it's organic credentials. For me the cocoa butter content needed to be higher to out weigh the sugar. This bar is available from Planet Organic priced at £1.09 (3 for 2) plus postage and packing.

Organic Milk Chocolate 34% from GO*DO

If you've not read my previous reviews on GO*DO then you will not know that in Italian, GO*DO means a moment of pure pleasure just for you. According to their advertising information provided they believe that GO*DO is the new frontier of chocolate. This is achieved by their direct control over quality, from growing the beans to making the finished chocolate; farm to bar vertical integration. That for me is a first!

If you didn't know already - Vertical integration is the process in which several steps in the production and/or distribution of a product or service are controlled by a single company or entity, in order to increase that company's or entity's power in the marketplace. When you read it out of context it sounds sinister but I think we know what you're getting at.....

GO*DO cocoa farms are located in Ecuador, The Dominican Republic and Peru, all among the best known origins for high quality cocoa beans. All the farms are managed following the rules of organic production by local people with the economic and professional support provided by GO*DO.

The Packaging: I do like this bar and it's cheery little cow carrying the cocoa beans. It is very cute and they make the most out of this little character on their website. The packaging itself is very effective and the muted tones of their colour palette fits well with the organic feel. I also believe they have the bar size about right especially as it will fit in a handbag easily and in fact two or three bars can be concealed without drawing attention!

Organic Milk Chocolate GO*DO

The Chocolate: This is an organic milk chocolate bar with a 34% cocoa content. There is a slight aroma of tobacco coming from the bar as you open the packaging with a lovely sweet cocoa aroma following closely behind. As the first chunk melts on your tongue I can detect a slight grainy texture to the chocolate but otherwise it is smooth and creamy all the way. I do prefer a milk chocolate with more cocoa but this is well balanced and does not have too much sweetness. The cocoa flavour is fairly short but I keep going back for more so that is always a good sign to me.

In its naked form!

I did enjoy this bar and it is as good as the mini chocolate bars I tasted sometime ago from Green and Blacks. Overall I give this bar 8/10 for flavour and 9/10 for price as it is such good value at 99p for an Organic 35g bar. I'm sure it would be big hit in the supermarkets such as Waitrose especially if sold in packs of six.

At this time of year they will make great stocking fillers!

Organic Dark Chocoalte 60% from GO*DO

Well let's see if this little bar lives up to the statement written on the outside of the wrapper, "GO*DO is my moment of pleasure!"

This is the second bar that I've reviewed from this company and I'm afraid the first bar was a particularly unpleasant encounter. I can still taste those coffee nibs which were so overpowering. Anyway enough moaning onwards and upwards!

The Packaging: The packaging is not particularly eye catching but the little cow is amusing. All the technical information about the bar is available on the back and carries the Certificate of conformity to the EU organic Regulations which defines Organic Agriculture and the foods derived from organic farming. That is a mouthful! The outer wrapper is fairly thick which protects the bar from the usual retail hazards that might befall it!

The Chocolate: This is an organic dark chocolate (60% cocoa) which has a soft, mellow tobacco aroma. The dark chocolate quickly melts and produces a delicious fruity almost milky texture in the mouth. As it has a 60% cocoa content the flavour is not particularly long lasting. But it is delicious and the 35g bar is going to disappear in no time.

To quote from Planet Organic's website, "GO*DO chocolate bars are made by a fifth-generation Italian family in their state-of-the-art factory near the Italian Lakes. The GO*DO objective is to guarantee the best quality products, the strict adherence to the rules of organic farming and the total support of local people in their small farms in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Peru, in order to produce a totally delicious chocolate. The secret of GO*DO is the total control of all elements of production, a rarity in the chocolate world where even the most important brands buy the cocoa paste or butter from wholesalers".

GO*DO 60% Dark Organic
This is a great little bar of chocolate is 99p from Planet Organic plus postage and packing and for a 35g bar it is good value for money. It certainly is a moment of pleasure and I want more moments!

GO*DO - Organic Dark Chocolate 60% - Espresso Coffee

Well we're on a roll so let's look at another dark organic chocolate bar this time flavoured with coffee. At this rate I will be on the ceiling all night!

This bar is from a company called 'GO*DO' and they originate from Italy. I found them at the Chocolate Unwrapped event a few weeks ago and they were an extremely cheerful bunch of people who came across as being passionate about their chocolate. In Italian 'Go*Do' means a moment of pure pleasure. Well their website certainly suggests that you're about to eat some of the very best chocolate in the world. Not only is it organic but it is sustainable. Their cocoa is sourced from small farmers in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Peru, where the risk of deforestation is high. Apparently crops are managed according to the strict rules of organic farming. I'm not sure who actually does the managing as it's not very clear on their site.

The Packaging: They've done a good job with the packaging of this bar and like their stallholders at Chocolate Unwrapped they like to show off their fun side. On a serious note all the technical information about the bar is available and each bar carries the Certificate of conformity to the EU organic Regulations which defines Organic Agriculture and the foods derived from organic farming. Try saying that when you've had a few too many beers. The outer wrapper is fairly thick which protects the bar from the usual retail hazards that might befall it!

The Chocolate: Well no surprises when you open this bar up the espresso flavour envelopes you totally. The coffee used to produce this bar comes from pure Arabic coffee from Central America. The surface of the bar is covered in small pin prick holes which is becoming a trend. When you break open the bar there is a honeycomb texture and roughness from the organic coffee nibs that have been blended into the chocolate. If I had tasted this bar with my eyes shut I'd think I was eating sand as it is extremely crunchy and reminds me of sandwiches on the beach.

Overall I'm not a fan of this chocolate due to the crunchy coffee nibs which leaves your mouth with lots of bits which you'll be crunching until dinner! I give this bar 7/10 for packaging and presentation but only 4/10 for texture, flavour and taste. Fortunately I have more bars from these guys to try, fingers crossed. I paid 70p for a 35g bar but it was on special offer however most retailers will sell this bar for 99p.

In the meantime this is the link to their website, GO*DO
